Route
The archipelago is vast! With thousands of islands available, we explore new routes and discover different campsites every time we set out. We will navigate many islands, inlets, canals, and sheltered coves, visiting stunning nature reserves and remote waterside hamlets. We will cover around 15km daily and find new wild camps each evening.
Our goal is to make a circular journey, returning to our trip's starting point and finishing up at the campsite for a well-earned shower and delicious food.
WIldlife
Beavers can be found in rivers and lakes in central Sweden but are less common in the country's northern parts. Sweden has a population of around 150,000 beavers, and they can be spotted by looking for characteristic gnaw marks on trees, especially aspen and birch. We will also paddle past their lodges, built on the water's edge, disguised as a pile of unorganised twigs.
We will also be paddling just after nesting season, so the bird life within the islands is fantastic, as birds and their young feed.
Camping
With so much wilderness available in Sweden, wild camping is very accessible. The outdoors is a way of life for the Swedes; there are many huts on the islands where locals head for summer breaks to enjoy their beautiful nature.
Where we camp will depend on how far we travel each day, and the location is often chosen to suit the weather conditions. There are no set 'campsites', but your guide will aim to land at some of our favourite spots: beaches facing the evening sun or remote islands with crystal clear waters which may even tempt you in for a swim.
With water scarce on the small rocky islands, we must carry an ample supply and occasionally look for a village or shop to restock.
There will be no facilities other than what nature provides, whilst wild camping and washing can be invigorating! Be sure to pack a sense of humour.
